An essay is an analytic or interpretive literary composition usually dealing with its subject from a limited or personal point of view. Although the purpose of an essay can vary depending on the context, audience and specific goals, it is written to communicate ideas, insights or experiences to the reader in a clear, coherent and engaging manner. It is a short piece of writing that presents ideas, arguments, or analysis on a topic.
There are four types of essays:
- Descriptive essay: It describes a person, place, or event.
- Narrative essay: It tells a story.
- Expository essay: It explains or informs.
- Argumentative essay: It presents and defends a position.
Structure of an essay
An essay has three parts: introduction, body and conclusion.
1. Introduction
- Start with a hook (a question, fact or thought-provoking sentence).
- Introduce the topic briefly, or provide the context.
- End with a thesis statement (your main idea).
2. Body (2-3 paragraphs)
- Each paragraph should focus on one main point.
- Start with a topic sentence.
- Add supporting details, examples or explanations.
- Use connectives (firstly, moreover, however, therefore, finally, etc.) for flow.
3. Conclusion
- Restate your main idea in different words.
- Summarize the key points.
- End with a closing thought (a lesson, a suggestion or a prediction).
